Dream Pop
Dream Pop is another genre of music that gained traction in the 1980s. Considered a subgenre of Alternative and Indie Pop, it’s frequently overlapped with its neighbouring genres. It takes familiar elements such as heavily reverbed guitars and atmospheric vocals to create a hazy landscape. The atmosphere it creates can be described as very textured, targeting a specific mood. It’s rare to find a climactic chorus in Dream Pop, tracks often hinge on melodies throughout. Generally this makes for a relaxed listen, but when combined with genres such as Shoegaze you can expect grand highs on the chorus and melodic dips in the verses.
Major Dream Pop artists
In modern times the most prominent artists of the genre have been bands. ‘Beach House’ are known for their Dream Pop aesthetic, a majority of their music falls under that category. ‘Cigarettes After Sex’ are another mainstream band who have had major success over the last decade. During the TikTok era many of their songs have gone viral, showing the sound has staying power in the present day. A personal favourite of mine is a band called ‘Men I Trust’ and in my opinion they embody the genre the most. They too have gained a lot of popularity over the last five years.
Many big artists take elements of Dream Pop and implement it into their regular music. ‘Lana Del Rey’ comes to mind as an artist who has very often had tracks which fit into the Dream Pop genre. Even though that’s not what she’s primarily known for, it’s still very apparent in her music. In the Indie scene ‘Clairo’ and ‘Faye Webster’ have both made many songs within this genre especially in their early works. More times than not if there is an Indie adjacent artist, you can sift through and find times where they have used this style in their music.
I think many of these artists have figured out the formula. In my opinion, Dream Pop works best combined with other genres. For example in albums where one track is Dream Pop, then the next has Indie Rock infused, it tends to be very complementary. Although Dream Pop standalone tracks can be fantastic, if a full-length album uses just that sound it’s quite easy to get hit with listener fatigue. When this happens you never truly appreciate the later tracks unless revisited at a later date.
